Wholly Informed Sex Ed (WISE) Off and Running!

Wholly Informed Sex Ed (WISE) provided training for 17 new OWL facilitators last weekend, July 23-25, 2021. A diverse and talented group of trainers traveled from across the country to lead us through both K-1/4-6 and 7-9/10-12 OWL facilitator training on the First Church campus. Three intensive days of learning and collaborating passed quickly, as participants learned essential “how-tos” for conducting classes in the inclusive and medically accurate Our Whole Lives Lifespan Sexuality curriculum developed by the UUA and UCC.

From a wide range of future WISE Dallas community facilitators, to several neighbors from the Denton UU Fellowship, our group enjoyed extraordinary expertise from engaging and informed trainers, and Texas-sized hospitality from our WDA/WEA volunteers, as well as several OWL alumni helping out during summer break from college. The WISE organization served as organizer, providing meals and support throughout the weekend. Trainers and participants alike shared best practices, sex-ed resources, and information during the event

WISE is a non-profit community outreach program originating at First U and funded by the Love First Capital Campaign. With community facilitators now trained and ready, WISE looks forward to an exciting fall, where we will work with such vital partners as Parkland Hospital and Fit and Faithful Living. Additionally, WISE will put to use a small Neighborhood Resource Initiative grant from Big Thought and the Dallas City of Learning, as we begin delivering comprehensive sexuality education to young people across Dallas.

Thank you to First Unitarian Church of Dallas for so graciously hosting this event!
