Wednesday, September 2 at 8:30 p.m. “Navigating Ambiguous Loss and Grief”

Children graduated with no graduation ceremony, they miss socializing with their friends, and are starting the school year without the usual rituals. Parents and caregivers have lost the freedom they are used to having to take a break, and have lost many outside sources of support for their families. Families missed out on hoped for family gatherings, vacations, and celebrations of milestones. All of these are forms of “ambiguous loss.” First Church parent and Director of Pastoral Care Jean Ann Powers explores how we can navigate the ambiguous loss and grief that come with parenting in a pandemic.

Wednesday, September 16 at 8:30 p.m. “Church at Home”

As parents, we are our child’s primary religious educators. Don’t let this scare you! It’s not about creating something new to do at home (we already have enough to do…). It’s about how we approach the things we already do through the lens of our Unitarian Universalist identity and values. How do we grow young Unitarian Universalists through the normal, daily activities of our family? Come explore this topic with Rev. Beth Dana and get some resources to support you in this role.

Wednesday, October 7 at 8:30 p.m. “COVID, Kids, and Risk”

As re-opening continues and more children go back to school, families are asking: What’s safe? What’s not? Different families tolerate different levels of risk in these times. Dr. Christopher Dreiling, pediatrician and First Church parent, joins us for a conversation and to answer your questions.

Wednesday, November 4 at 8:30 p.m. “Parent and Family Wellness”

As parents we need to take care of ourselves so we can care for others! First Church parents Valerie Milner and Kathianne Williams explore wellness for parents and families. Valerie brings her background in TRE (Tension & Trauma Releasing Exercises) and Kathianne brings her background as a wellness coach and dietician.

Wednesday, January 6 at 8:30 p.m. “The Church in 2021”

Rev. Beth Dana, Martha Norton, and Dr. Eric Bing (an epidemiologist and member of our church’s COVID team) talk about what church and ministry with children and families looks like in the new year. Dr. Bing shares with us the work of the COVID team, and how they’re helping us plan for re-opening when it’s safe to do so.

Wednesday, February 3 at 8:30 p.m. “Sexuality, Social Media, and Your Child”

Rev. Beth Dana, Martha Norton, and Our Whole Lives teachers Charles Irsch and Angie Sifferman talk about children/teens, sexuality and relationships, and online/social media activity, grounded in the values of our church’s Our Whole Lives sexuality education program. It’s never too early to think about having these conversations with your children.
